Outdoor enclosures protect electrical equipment from rain, dust, sun and temperature swings. Choosing the right ingress protection (IP) rating and designing the enclosure for it from the start is the difference between years of reliable service and early failure. Here's what to consider.
Understanding IP Ratings
An IP (Ingress Protection) rating has two digits. The first rates solid-particle protection (dust), the second liquid protection. For outdoor electrical enclosures, the common targets are IP54 (dust-protected, splash-proof), IP65 (dust-tight, water-jet-proof) and IP66 (dust-tight, powerful-jet-proof). Telecom, municipal and security cabinets most often call for IP65.
How to Design for Waterproofing
Seams and joints
Every seam is a potential leak point. Continuous welding, folded edges that shed water away from openings, and gasketed doors are the core techniques. Quality welding and deburring matter more than the steel thickness alone.
Sealing and hardware
Doors use EPDM or silicone gaskets; cable entries use weatherproof glands; fasteners use sealing washers. The enclosure should be designed so water runs off, not pools on top surfaces — sloped tops and drainage channels help.
Condensation
Even a sealed enclosure can trap internal moisture. Vents with filters or drainage plugs let condensation escape without breaking the IP rating.
Material Selection
Cold-rolled steel is cost-effective and strong; galvanized steel and stainless steel resist corrosion in humid or coastal environments. Electrostatic powder coating adds a durable, weather-resistant outer layer. For lighter applications, aluminum offers corrosion resistance with less weight.
The Manufacturing Process
Waterproof enclosures are produced through a controlled sequence: design and DFM, laser cutting, bending, forming, welding, grinding and deburring, riveting, powder coating, and assembly with QC — see our 9-step fabrication process. Precision bending and validated welds are essential to hold the IP rating in production.
Choosing a Manufacturer
Look for ISO-certified quality, IP protection testing and experience with outdoor infrastructure. SanJun Hardware fabricates waterproof distribution boxes, metering cabinets and outdoor housings for security and municipal projects.
