Sheet Metal Fabrication Process: 9 Steps from Design to Assembly

Every precision sheet metal enclosure passes through a controlled, nine-step manufacturing flow. Understanding this process helps you evaluate suppliers, anticipate lead times and communicate more precisely with your manufacturer. Here is how SanJun Hardware takes a metal enclosure from concept to finished product.

Step 1 — Design & DFM

Every project starts with free CAD and design-for-manufacturability (DFM) review. Engineers check material thickness, bend radii, hole-to-edge distances and tolerance stack-ups, catching costly mistakes before any metal is cut.

Step 2 — Laser Cutting

Programmed flat patterns are cut on fiber laser machines for high precision, clean edges and tight tolerances. Laser cutting supports complex profiles, ventilation slots and perforation patterns that conventional tooling cannot achieve.

Step 3 — Precision Bending

CNC press brakes form the cut blanks along programmed bend lines. Consistent bend angles and radii are critical — they determine how well panels fit together in later assembly.

Step 4 — Forming

Beyond simple bends, forming adds three-dimensional features such as louvered vents, embossed stiffening ribs, countersinks and drawn features that give a panel its strength and function.

Step 5 — Welding

Enclosures are joined by TIG, MIG or laser welding depending on material and seam requirements. Skilled welders and jigs ensure square corners, minimal distortion and structural integrity — the foundation of a durable cabinet.

Step 6 — Grinding & Deburring

Welds are ground smooth and sharp edges are deburred to remove burrs and splatter. This step is essential for both operator safety and the final surface finish.

Step 7 — Riveting

Hardware such as studs, standoffs, hinges and clinch fasteners are pressed or riveted into place, creating strong, reusable mounting points without damaging the metal.

Step 8 — Electrostatic Powder Coating

Panels are pre-treated, then coated with electrostatic powder and cured in an oven. Powder coating produces a uniform, durable, corrosion-resistant finish in a wide range of colors and textures.

Step 9 — Assembly & Quality Control

Finally, components are assembled, and every unit undergoes dimensional inspection and functional checks against drawings and specifications before packaging and shipment.
